WHAT TO EXPECT...
Volunteers will help remove weeds and litter as well as apply DSNY compost - made from NYC food scraps - to street tree beds. Volunteers will also be planting bulbs brought to you by the New Yorkers for Parks Daffodil Project. Kneeling, squatting, or lifting 30 pound compost bags might be among the physical activities. Please inform your team leader if you have any physical limitations.
WHAT TO WEAR...
Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Gloves, tools and materials will be provided. Dress appropriately for the weather.
WHAT TO BRING...
Water bottle and small snack if desired.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS...
Street tree care events serve to both create awareness about NYC's urban ecology and educate residents on the multitude of benefits healthy trees provide our neighborhoods. The idea is for the food scraps to be repurposed and redistributed back to the community as compost through greening projects. The NYC Compost Project is a program funded by the NYC Department of Sanitation with the mission of providing New Yorkers with the knowledge and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. Street tree care events are one of many ways we accomplish this mission and your participation helps to further this cause.

The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
