Make a positive difference in the life of an older Latinx adult as a Peer Counselor. Peer Counseling is a one-on-one and group service provided by trained volunteers in San Mateo County. As a volunteer you receive FREE training and professional support, while you offer confidential emotional support, encouragement, and understanding for one hour, once a week to older adults facing challenges such as loneliness, depression, grief, isolation from family & friends, loss and life changes. This training is specifically for Spanish speaking volunteers, to support other Spanish speaking older adults in San Mateo county.

The training will be virtual via Zoom. You must have a tablet or computer to access the training.
The training will be in Spanish.
Volunteers MUST live in San Mateo County, CA
Volunteers must be 55+ yrs.

Training starts: Fall 2022 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9:30am - 12 :30pm.

Description

The Senior Peer Counseling Program is a one-on-one and group service provided by trained volunteers who offer confidential emotional support, guidance and empathy to older adults facing challenges such as loneliness, depression, grief, isolation from family and friends and life changes

Peer counselors develop a special bond of trust with older adults who share similar age, experience, values, wisdom and/or culture. Peer Counseling is available in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Filipino and to the LGBTQAI+ community.

  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 55
  • Orientation or Training
  • One hour a week to visit participant in-person (or virtually, until its safe for home visits). Training consists of ten 3 hour classes on-line.
  • Attend clinical supervision group 1x a month for 2 hours, currently on-line.
