ORGANIZATION: Stepping Stones Shelter

Purpose: Interns will assist families who are receiving extended support from stepping stones shelter. Their work will assist families exiting the shelter to transition into a more stable living situation.

Description of Duties: Follow up with families in their 2 nd and 3 rd year of being registered in post shelter support. Interns will be trained by our case managers for the first few visits, and interns will complete the rest of their home visits independently. During these visits you will help residents fill out forms describing what families would like to accomplish and work on as well as put together any "wish lists" they might have to obtain supplies from the shelter.

Time Requirement: Semester or Summer long commitment to volunteering 15 to 20 hours a week

Qualifications: 18 years or older, preferably attending college in a field related to social service, able to provide own transportation to clients homes and the shelter, great communication skills, patient and understanding of sensitive family issues

Orientation/Training: After applying, you will come in to clarify any questions you may have about the position with our Volunteer Maryland Coordinator. You will then receive a tour of the house. Afterwards, you will receive more specific training for home visits from Divita Washington (Director of External Client Relations) and KeAndre Blue (Client Relations Coach). We will also provide any necessary forms for your home visits.

Evaluation and Reporting Procedures: When in the shelter, you would sign in and out to record your time here. All volunteers are expected to arrive on time. If you need to call out in the case of sickness or an emergency, please let us know 24 hours ahead of time. Interns will report to Divita and KeAndre.

Location: Calls and organizational tasks will be completed at Stepping Stones Shelter. Visits will be done in client's homes.

Stepping Stones Shelter provides homeless families with children the opportunity to regain their independence by offering shelter and support services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.

Description

Stepping Stones Shelter is short-term emergency/assessment shelter for homeless families with children in Rockville, Maryland. We are one of only three Montgomery County shelters that provide services to entire families to help them regain their independence. The Shelter has six bedrooms and can accommodate six families of various sizes, serving up to 27 people at any one time. Stepping Stones has been providing families with shelter, food, clothes, case management and support services for over 30 years!

We need you to help us continue to serve these families in need. We have many volunteer opportunities for people in the community and hope to connect each of you with something you enjoy doing. Below is a list of most of our volunteer jobs along with a short position description. We welcome individuals and groups (maximum of 10) to volunteer with us.
