Title: Childcare Assistant
Program: Alexandria Community Shelter
Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator or ACS RSS on-site
Description of Role: The Alexandria Community Shelter is New Hope Housing’s family shelter in the City of Alexandria. As residents prepare to transition from shelter to housing, New Hope Housing offers the Out of Poverty life skills classes for adults in the shelter. We need volunteers to provide childcare so that parents can attend the classes. Volunteers will spend time the children in a supervised setting while classes are occurring. Ages of children that are in shelter can range from infants to high school.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Play with children
- Keep children in designated area
- Assist with positive behavior management of the children
- Act as a positive role model for children in the group
- Remain in a group setting - volunteers are not allowed to be one-on-one with children
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Inform New Hope Housing staff of anything children say that is of concern
- Maintain a professional relationship with children and parents
- Act as a representative of New Hope Housing while volunteering and in the community
- Maintain confidentiality
Skills Needed:
- Passion for working with youth
- Ability to engage youth
- Ability to empathize with children in the program
- Ability to think on your feet and adapt to different situations
Desired Experience:
- Experience working with youth in a childcare, afterschool, or tutoring environment preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of homelessness and how it can affect children
Requirements: New volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation and pass a background check to begin tutoring. Volunteers must also have a signed Confidentiality, Liability, and Photo release forms on file with the Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers must be 16 years or older.
Time Commitment: Childcare is needed while parents are participating in the Out of Poverty class. The class is held each Monday evening, beginning May 1 st and will end on June 26 th except for Memorial Day. Class will be held on Tuesday, May 30 th that week.
