Gallagher Services is looking for interested beginning farmer volunteers who could provide both hands-on and technical assistance 1-2 mornings a week now through early fall as part of a pre-vocational horticulture program at a small farm in Glen Arm (Harford Rd.).
Gallagher Services is a program of Catholic Charities that serves adults with intellectual disabilities. This farm pilot is designed to help these individuals learn vocational skills and to eventually help them get a job in the greater community. Volunteers would be needed to help implement projects and monitor the individuals while on site.
The owner of the farm is a local business person who has partnered with Gallagher Services Day Program to work cooperatively on creating a farm experience where adults and youth with special needs can learn about agriculture, horticulture and growing healthy food.
This will be the second year for the Farm Pilot. Assistance is needed with planting (crops to be determined) in raised beds through black plastic mulch with drip irrigation tube. Also co-teach with a paid farm manager and/or master gardener, how to care for plants and control weeds and manage pests as well as how to harvest and prepare crops for consumers.
