Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
Today Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which this holiday is growing.
We Need Your Help!Time may include an orientation and a few trainings before the event date. Volunteers will need to be available for two dates. One day for orientation and one for the date of the actual event.
Volunteers can sign up for shifts and do not need to do the full 8 hours, although it is encouraged. Grab your friends and come help us celebrate this wonderful day!
Tasks can include supporting other volunteers in areas of planning, helping with set up and break down as well as assisting during the event
Thank you!
