Vela’s mission is to empower families of children with special needs through hands-on information, resources and support. We believe that all families have a right to truly understand their child’s needs, to receive support, to connect with their communities, to know they are not alone, and to become empowered in the process. Our board is composed of leaders who are dedicated to learn and grow with the families we serve.

Board Member Role and Responsibilities:

Board members will support the work of Vela and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a critical partnership. Specific Board member responsibilities include:

  • Serves a three-year term with potential for one additional term
  • Attends a minimum 75% of monthly board meetings (held the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7:30pm) and special related meetings
  • Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time
  • Stays informed about organizational matters, prepares well for meetings, and review minutes and reports.
  • Actively participates on the boards annual evaluation and planning process
  • Actively participates in fundraising and outreach for the organization

The role of the Secretary is to support the Chair in ensuring the smooth functioning of board meetings. As Board Secretary, the incumbent will fulfill the following roles and responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a member of the Board of Directors
  • Records and manages minutes of Board Meetings including any handouts
  • Maintains an action register and decision register for each meeting
  • Ensures draft minutes are sent to the Board Chair within 3 working days after the meeting
  • Provides guidance and is sufficiently familiar with organization’s bylaws
