About Kidney Disease:

Kidney health is one of the most important, yet least-discussed, issues in healthcare today. It is estimated that 1 in 3 American adults is currently at risk for developing kidney disease, and 26 million people already have it, although most don’t even realize it. Kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the U.S., killing more people annually than breast or prostate cancer. Because kidney disease often has no symptoms, it can go unchecked until it is far advanced. Yet early kidney disease is very easy to detect with simple blood and urine tests and is very treatable in the beginning stages.

Event Information:

Maine Nephrology Associates and the American Kidney Fund are partnering for our 2nd Annual Maine Nephrology Associates’ 5K Walk/Run for Kidney Health. The race will take place at Edward Payson Park on April 30th at 9 am with same day registrations beginning at 8 am. Preceding this race will be a 100-yard dash for ages 10 and under. All proceeds from this race will be donated to American Kidney Fund, which will, in turn, be used to help support Maine dialysis patients who are experiencing financial difficulties.

What tasks will volunteers perform?

  • Course Marshalls: Direct runners and keep them safe along the route. Duties include a proper understanding of the course, being able to stop pedestrians and/or traffic while runners cross.
  • Cheer Squads: Great for groups! Keep the excitement and momentum going on course. Duties include cheering, laughing - anything to bring out a smile on our runners' faces!
  • Course Entertainment: If you are a band we'd love to have you provide the soundtrack to the race!
