Cornerstone Assistance Network wants to place a Development VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) at Literacy Connexus.

Pay: $990 per month BEFORE taxes

Literacy Connexus provides training throughout Texas to prepare volunteers to teach English as a Second Language to adults. We conduct weekend workshops in various locations, led by our TEX (Teaching English with Excellence) team, each spring and fall. Our training is directed toward church-based ESL programs, but valuable for service in community-based ESL programs, as well. We also provide assistance and resources to promote family literacy. Our Ready for School! curriculum assists refugee families in preparing their children for American schools. Through What’s for Lunch? we provide access to books for children participating in summer meals programs. Through our Books for the Border and Beyond project, low-income parents are encouraged and equipped to read to their babies and small children. Book Banks throughout the state provide local access to children’s books for distribution and serve as a collection point for donated books. Literacy Connexus consults with job readiness programs in Texas to provide training and resources to organizations facilitating re-entry into the workforce. We advocate for people with language and literacy needs at the local, state, and federal level, and encourage all to join in this endeavor. Our goal is to improve lives and futures by raising awareness and addressing the language and literacy needs of individuals.

The VISTA member will build new partnerships that will help Literacy Connexus better serve the illiterate and impoverished community. The VISTA will establish and develop a working database that will enhance current processes. The VISTA will also train staff on the function and implementation of this database. The VISTA will gather data from Literacy Connexus programs and projects throughout the year. Collection of this data will allow the organization to generate impact reports for grant applications, donor appreciation, and other uses. The VISTA will create a donor engagement system for scheduling updates and donor appreciation of individual contributors and foundations. The VISTA will also develop a policy and procedure manual.
