Compeer for Adults and Seniors
Friendship can change a person's life. Good things happen when you have a friend. Friends listen. They share. Friends are the best kind of medicine for someone who's striving for good mental health. Through Compeer you can be a caring friend to someone. It can be as simple as going for a walk, seeing a movie, or just picking up the phone. It can take as little as an hour a week. Compeer matches volunteers with adults and seniors ages 18 and over. We have about 170 people matched with Compeer volunteers, but there are still many more waiting for a friend in Erie County. They might even live in your neighborhood. Please contact sarah@compeerbuffalo.org if you would like more information.

Compeer for Kids
Compeer Kids range in age from 3-17. There are more than 100 Compeer programs in the United States, but Compeer of Greater Buffalo has the largest kids program. Each year we make a difference in the lives of hundreds of kids who need a friend. Many Compeer kids don't have the support that they need to succeed. A mentor impacts a child in big ways by simply spending quality time with them. Compeer kids love to share their stories. For more information contact karen@compeerbuffalo.org.

About Compeer of Greater Buffalo

Location:

1179 Kenmore Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14217, US

Mission Statement

Promoting good mental health through meaningful friendships.

Description

Compeer Buffalo operates four core programs, each focusing on friendship and supportive relationships to encourage mental wellness. These include one-on-one volunteer mentoring, group mentoring social activities, school-based mentoring, and Mental Health Education (including the evidenced based curriculum for Mental Health First Aid). Volunteers become positive role models, help raise self-esteem, increase social and communication skills, and encourage independence for their Compeer friends. The relationship between volunteers and their friends encourages a sense of belonging, trust, respect, hope, support, and empowerment.

The Compeer model of one-to-one support is an evidenced based program that was recognized in 2007 by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - a branch of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services - as an evidenced based program under the National Registry of Evidenced based Programs and Practices (NREPP).
