Boulder Valley Inspiring Connections Outdoors (BVICO, formerly, Inner City Outings) is an outreach program of the Sierra Club that provides free nature outings and wilderness experiences to children from low-income families in Boulder County and parts of Denver.

In order to develop a new generation of outings leader from the communities that we serve, BVICO has developed a youth leadership curriculum that was originally designed for in-class delivery. The curriculum covers basic subjects in earth and life science, critical thinking, outdoor skills, and, of course, leadership. We are now looking for a volunteer to spearhead reformulation and expansion of this curriculum for delivery on outings. Each curriculum component would include an instructor’s guide; cards with learning materials, activities, and instructions to be used in the field, and such other materials or equipment as are needed.

The Curriculum Director would lead the effort to develop and deploy the curriculum on the many BVICO outings led each year. We lead outings for children of all ages, but the focus of this curriculum would be on students of middle- and high-school age.

A successful curriculum director will be able to work well with others, write well, develop and keep to a schedule/plan, remain self-motivated. Our goal is to begin to deploy the curriculum in the 2017-2018 school year, so it would be good to be able to invest at least 4 to 6 hours per week in this effort between now and the start of the next school year. After that, the time requirement should gradually drop to 2 hours per week. While BVICO is an all-volunteer program and, thus, cannot employ the director, modest funding is available to support development and production of materials, awards, prizes, etc.
