There are folks in Coos County who need to get to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay for treatment, and for various reasons cannot drive themselves. The American Cancer Society is seeking people throughout Coos County willing to pick up a neighbor (broadly speaking!), drive them to CB for treatment, and then take them home again. You set your own schedule -- you log onto a simple website when you want to know whether someone needs a ride, and if it works for you to take them, we set it up. Of course, you have to have a background check so we know the patient will be traveling with a safe driver! Patients have to be able to get in and out of your car on their own, and of course, if you smoke, we ask that you not smoke around cancer patients. (Plus if you smoke and you're ready to quit, we're here to help you!) A lot of it runs through a super-easy online system that lets you see and select rides on whatever day, so access to a computer is important. You must have a safe, reliable vehicle and proof of insurance, and you must be in decent health yourself.
