Do you have experience navigating the education system? Or a desire to learn more about it, so you can help others? You may be a great parent partner!
What you would do:
Parent partners individually assist the families of students with children who have special needs to understand and navigate the special education system. You will also be part of bringing together families to pool their knowledge and resources they have learned to engage the school system for the betterment of their children and community. If you have passionate about opportunities in special education, then we want you to join us! Schedule and time commitment is flexible to meet your needs and the needs of the parents/families.
Why be a parent partner?
To assist in helping families become self-sustaining and self-advocating. Essentially, we want to create a school+family environment where our clients will no longer need our advocacy skills or policy knowledge, because we have successfully educated, mentored, and empowered them to independence. Join our team, and help be the difference.

Mission Statement
Serving as a Community Resource Center, Mission Empower provides advocacy, education, and the promotion of inclusion, assisting families and their children with disabilities to enable their children to use their gifts and talents to reach their potential and become productive members of our community.
Description
Mission Empower is a local, 501(c)3 nonprofit operating in Erie County since 2007. The organization reaches families who have children with any type of disability across Erie County, from birth to age 26. Mission Empower serves as educational advocates for these families, assisting them to obtain the supports and services their child needs to be successful at school and in the community.
Mission Empower currently engages with parents who have children with disabilities through several avenues. Educational advocacy is typically a complaint-driven process: parents are often not aware that educational advocates are available to help them navigate the school system and guide them to solutions for their child. Referrals from area agencies such as The Achievement Center and Erie County Care Management often come in only when the parents have reached a major impasse with their child’s school personnel about how to proceed with their educational needs and curriculum adaptations.
Mission Empower is working to reach out more proactively to families who have children receiving special education services with introductory and multi-part intensive parent training courses, covering topics from effective collaboration to basic education and disability law.
