REGISTER to walk with Mission Empower on our Highmark Walk portal here. About Mission Empower:

Mission Empower (formerly Educational Advocacy for the Inclusion of Youth) began as a volunteer, grassroots organization committed to advocating for inclusion within the school system and the community. We are committed to empowering families and their children with disabilities such as dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, physical, visual, deafness and hearing impairment, mental health and behavioral needs and intellectual disabilities. Research clearly shows that everyone benefits when people with and without disabilities learn, play, and work together. We are a stronger community when true diversity is the norm, and high expectations for all prevail.

In 2012, Mission Empower was designated a federal Community Parent Resource Center, (CPRC), only one of two in Pennsylvania. As part of our federal designation, we were commissioned to improve the educational opportunities of Erie County families who live in poverty, reside in rural areas, come from diverse backgrounds, or for parents who have disabilities themselves. Currently, we provide several key programs including; 1) 'Youth Envision', a youth program ensuring successful transitions from high school to college or career, and 2) 'Mission Read - A Dyslexia Center for Excellence' which is a reading program supporting children with dyslexic tendencies. Your donations will go a long way towards running these essential support programs for Erie's children and youth!

Mission Statement

Serving as a Community Resource Center, Mission Empower provides advocacy, education, and the promotion of inclusion, assisting families and their children with disabilities to enable their children to use their gifts and talents to reach their potential and become productive members of our community.

Description

Mission Empower is a local, 501(c)3 nonprofit operating in Erie County since 2007. The organization reaches families who have children with any type of disability across Erie County, from birth to age 26. Mission Empower serves as educational advocates for these families, assisting them to obtain the supports and services their child needs to be successful at school and in the community.

Mission Empower currently engages with parents who have children with disabilities through several avenues. Educational advocacy is typically a complaint-driven process: parents are often not aware that educational advocates are available to help them navigate the school system and guide them to solutions for their child. Referrals from area agencies such as The Achievement Center and Erie County Care Management often come in only when the parents have reached a major impasse with their child’s school personnel about how to proceed with their educational needs and curriculum adaptations.

Mission Empower is working to reach out more proactively to families who have children receiving special education services with introductory and multi-part intensive parent training courses, covering topics from effective collaboration to basic education and disability law.
