Title: Education Intern

Employment Status: Unpaid intern, must work 120 hours over 3 months

Schedule: Schedule will vary based on availability and project needs

Compensation: Unpaid

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Midwest Museum of Natural History is seeking an intern to assist the Museum Educator in creating and implementing both public and private programming.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop lesson plans and programs
  • Lead programs including the OSCAR summer camp
  • Conduct research on interpretation techniques and teaching methods
  • Assist in the organization of the classroom and education materials
  • Handle artifacts from Museum collection as visual tools in programs
  • Other tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working towards a bachelor or master’s degree (or recently graduated) in natural history, museum studies, education, or related field
  • Experience working with children ages 4-12 and/or live animals is a plus
  • Energetic, independent, creative, and comfortable with public speaking
  • Detail oriented and highly organized
  • Computer proficient; must be able to conduct online research and use Microsoft Office

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position requires the ability to lift up to 40 pounds, go up and down stairs, work outdoors, crawl, bend, stand, or walk for long periods.

MMNH is a natural history museum that works to inspire interest about the natural world, including biology, geology, and anthropology. Our main gallery has over 100 mounted animals from around the world, and we are the home to over 30 live animals. Hands-on, active, engaging programming and exhibits are our specialty!
