Love to teach? Share the power of fresh local foods through education!

City Green is looking for enthusiastic volunteer outdoor field trip educators to work with students PreK-6th grade at City Green’s Farm Eco-Center and Learning Garden. City Green hosts classes from northern NJ school districts with a focus on schools from urban at-risk communities. These outdoor field trips are used as an opportunity to enhance students’ academic achievement through hands-on experiential learning and interaction with the natural world.

Volunteers will be trained to work as field trip educators to provide lessons on gardening and farming, sustainable agriculture, healthy eating and cooking, animal husbandry, native plants and wildlife, and a variety of environmental topics.

Spring field trips are held throughout the month of May, and fall field trips are held in October. Volunteer shifts are Monday - Friday and are typically 8:30am - 11am and/or 11:30am -2pm. Time commitments should be 1-2 days per week, 3-6 hours per day. Experience working in child education or an environmental field is preferred but not required.

Mission Statement

Mission Statement

City Green, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating the establishment of urban farms and gardens in northern New Jersey's cities to enrich the lives of inner city residents, while cultivating education in public health, nutrition and the environment. City Green offers practical, technical and financial support to community members of all ages to design, create and manage these urban green spaces. City Green promotes social justice and environmental equality through these greening efforts.

Description

Through a variety of programs and projects, City Green has been providing access to fresh organically grown produce, education on gardening, nutrition and the environment, and avenues to revitalize and rejuvenate the urban environment for ten years. Our goal at City Green is two-fold; to increase food security by providing access to healthy, affordable, culturally appropriate food; and to use gardening and growing food as a catalyst for urban revitalization both on the personal and community level. New Ground is City Green’s neighborhood community garden program. This includes community gardening, Green Your Block! and Back Yard Gardener workshops, an annual Garden Contest, and Community Events. City Sprouts is our youth gardening program, taking place at community gardens, after school facilities and our own City Green Learning Garden. School Grounds includes school gardens and environmental clubs. Our City Green Farms program includes two organic urban farm sites producing a variety of organic produce that is sold at City Green run Farm Stands in Paterson, Passaic and Clifton. All City Green Farm stands accept and double the value of federal food benefits such as EBT, WIC and FMNP. All excess produce is donated to local food pantries through our Good Food Box donation program. Growing Strong is City Green’s paid high school intern program providing summer employment and youth development to inner city high school students.
