Panning
For many guests at RGM panning for gold is the highlight of their visit. Volunteers willing to participate in this activity will have an opportunity to interact with a large number of visitors and share their knowledge and experience while panning. Staff will provide demonstrations and training regarding panning techniques for interested volunteers which will familiarize them with the process as well as the associated site history. Panning is a rigorous activity that requires the ability to stand for long period of time, agitate pans weighing 10-20lbs for sustained period of time, and the ability to shovel dirt to refill pans all while maintaining appropriate customer service standards.

Location:

Mission Statement
To preserve and interprete the site of the first discovery of gold in America.
Description
Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1848, when it was eclipsed by the great rush to California.
