SPECIAL EVENTS
Large, Annual Events
Volunteer help is particularly crucial during large, annual events like A Golden Christmas and speed panning competition. During these sorts of events, it is always helpful to have volunteer power for registration, safety, crowd control, and even survey-taking duties. Overall, these events offer a fun and exciting way to try something new at the site and engage with lots of new visitors!
Special Projects
Do you have special skills or interests? Then let us know-we need your help! Some volunteers host workshops and demonstrations, while others enjoy re-enacting. If you have research experience, you could help with interpretation or tour and exhibit development at the site. What about design or social media experience, or even administrative skills? Help us out with our social media pages and our marketing campaigns. Volunteering at the Reed Gold Mine is about a lot more than giving tours-we want you to do what you love to do and what you’re skilled at right here.

About Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site
Location:
9621 Reed Mine Road, Midland, NC 28107, US
Mission Statement
To preserve and interprete the site of the first discovery of gold in America.
Description
Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1848, when it was eclipsed by the great rush to California.
