In search of local crocheters to make octopuses for premature babies. Our organization Octopus for a Preemie - US is a group of volunteers from across the United States that crochet octopuses for local NICUs. The purpose of the octopus is to promote comfort and development of pre-term infants. The tentacles mimic the feel of the umbilical cord in their tiny hands. Octopuses have been found to sooth the babies, improve breathing and heart rate, and help prevent them from pulling on their wires and tubes. This project has had success and support in NICUs around the globe! If you are a crocheter looking to give your time and talents to a great cause - or if you are a non-crocheter that is interested in donating materials - please contact your local Octopus for a Preemie Ambassador for more details on how to be a part of this amazing program! Be sure to join the national and local Facebook groups for more information, including patterns, list of approved materials and lots of input from fellow octopus creators.
