Philadelphia Great Strides 2012
Independence Blue Cross volunteers at Philadelphia Great Strides

Join the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by volunteering at our Ocean City Great Strides walk. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems of approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. It is estimated that more than 10 million Americans are unknowing, symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene.

Great Strides is our signature walk event for the Foundation, providing a great opportunity for people within the community to get involved in a meaningful cause. Participants can form walk teams at their workplace, through their clubs and organizations, or with friends and family. Walk day is a fun, family-oriented event with a healthy 5k walk, children's activities, food, and festivities that participants look forward to year after year.

Through the CF Foundation’s efforts and events like Great Strides, as well as the support of generous donors and dedicated volunteers, the life expectancy of a child with CF has doubled in the last 30 years. Today, the search to find a cure is more promising than ever before.

We are in need of volunteers for the day of the event to help the program run smoothly. Volunteers will help with a variety of tasks such as set up, running registration, distribution of t-shirts, giving of food coupons, overseeing the children’s fun zone area, manning the walk route as cheerleaders, and cleaning up from the event. We welcome volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. If you have any questions, please reach out to Stephanie at sbello@cff.org. Thank you for your support!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care.

Description

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.

Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a cure. Thanks to the dedication and financial backing of our supporters -- patients, families and friends, clinicians, researchers, volunteers, individual donors, corporations and staff, we are making a difference.

Statistics

  • About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year.
  • More than 70% of patients are diagnosed by age two.
  • More than 45% of the CF patient population is age 18 or older.
  • The predicted median age of survival for a person with CF is in the late 30s.
