Volunteers are the heart and soul of Neighbor Brigade. They are the face of the organization and are people who do generous acts of kindness in their communities on a regular basis. Chapters vary in size and can begin with as few as 5 volunteers and will often grow to have numbers in the hundreds. Volunteering with Neighbor Brigade is incredibly flexible and allows a person to sign up for tasks once a week or once a year depending on their availability. The rate of activity in a Chapter can often depend on the size of the town, the time of year, other available resources in that town, and the outreach efforts that have been made in that community to publicize Neighbor Brigade. Students ages 14 and older may participate in our programs as a volunteer if their caregiver agrees to our online waiver and thus students can use their hours for necessary school community service hours. The most common volunteer activities include making (or buying) meals and delivering to a family or individual’s house, driving individuals to their medical appointments, driving to meet basic needs such as supermarket or pharmacy trips, light housework and dog walking. The majority of our clients are undergoing cancer treatments, have had a recent surgery, are ill, have had an accident, a recent death in the family, or a complicated pregnancy. The help that our volunteers give to our clients is amazing and truly helps them to recover faster and more thoroughly. Occasionally Chapters will also participate in community drives which support local organizations like food pantries, veteran facilities, shelters, and other nonprofit entities.
