Summary

The Health Education Intern will provide support to the efforts of the organization as they relate to coordination of services for older adults. Must have an interest in working with the older adult population.

Essential Job Functions

  • Implement health promotion programs
  • Prepare and present health/safety programs at senior living complexes
  • Coordinate health fairs
  • Complete needs assessments
  • Attend meetings with senior advocacy groups and health-related coalitions
  • Assist with the Fall Prevention Assessments
  • Write articles for newsletters and department website
  • Develop health-related brochures and handouts

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer and Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain professional and confidential boundaries
  • Must possess a high level of integrity

Education and Experience

This internship is best suited for graduate students majoring in Public Health, Health Services, Gerontology or related fields. Undergraduate students will be considered. Bilingual skills are a plus, but are not required.

Although this is an unpaid internship and does not lead to permanent employment, students and recent graduates are offered an excellent opportunity to enhance career skills, explore career options, apply academic knowledge to the workplace and build resumes. The internship provides personal gratification and satisfaction through working with older adults to improve their health. Students also gain a greater understanding of non-profit work and the provision of social services.

Schedule can be determined by the number of required hours for the intern’s academic program. If an applicant will not receive academic credit for the internship, a minimum 12 - 20 hours per week for one semester/quarter is required. Hours must be scheduled during regular business hours, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Some weekend hours may be available. Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for this internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.
