Position Overview: Participate in Butterfly Pavilion’s Research and Conservation program by feeding, cleaning and monitoring delicate invertebrate species. Animals under the Keeper Aide’s care include, but are not limited to, dragonflies, damselflies, and tarantulas.
Length of commitment: 1-3 volunteers can share a total commitment of nine to12 hrs. per week, two to three days per week with days spaced out. For example, Monday/Wednesday/Friday, Tuesday/Friday, Monday/Thursday, or Monday/Friday. Three days per week preferred. Weekend days are also acceptable. Ideally, this volunteer will begin in Spring of 2017 and continue through August 2017 or later.
Key Responsibilities:
- Feed Research and Conservation animals.
- Perform water and enclosure changes.
- Communicate with Butterfly Pavilion staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Keep detailed records on care, development, and health of animals.
Initial Impact: Support the health and wellbeing of Research and Conservation animals.
Sustainable Outcome: Participate in the implementation of new animal husbandry techniques that may help research and conservation efforts around the world.
Training & Support: The volunteer reports to and is supported and trained by the Research and Conservation Coordinator. Training includes shadowing and monitored application in the laboratory and Rearing Room, as well as a full background and updates on research. The Keeper Aide will have access to grant proposals, plans, and papers relating to the projects they are contributing to.
Qualifications & Skills: Reliable; excellent communication; willingness to learn; ability to focus on a task; a gentle, steady hand; love of invertebrates; interest in science
Benefits to volunteer:Learn and practice Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) husbandry, record keeping and inventory practices, applicable across AZA accredited institutions. Participate in applied conservation research helping sensitive invertebrate animals.
