About

Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

No experience or training is necessary to work with students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage them and encourage their progress on a project.

This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Harlem, NYC. To sign up, please contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code:

Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

Overview: This combined first- and second-grade class learned about various worms, their anatomy, and their role in helping fertilize soil with We Dig Worms! by Kevin McCloskey. Writing coaches will guide students in reaching final drafts of their reports on a "garden helper" of their choice. On May 9th, 9:30 - 10:45 AM, students will work with research coaches to find facts about a bee, butterfly, ladybug or worm (you can sign up for one or both dates).
