Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with pre-K-12 students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage and encourage their progress on a project.
This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. To volunteer, please reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org:
Program 2412RG-G
- Thursday, May 4th, 2017
- 9:00 - 10:30 AM
- Writing Coach
About the workshop: Second-graders read Robbin Gourly’s Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make You a Pie: A Story About Edna Lewis, about a woman chef and early champion of purity of ingredients, regional cuisine, and farm-to-table food. After exploring a community garden with the author, students will make connections to cooking and sharing meals to write about traditions associated with a favorite family recipe. Writing coaches will guide them as they revise their work to reach a final draft.
