The Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for volunteer counselors to help us with 2017 MDA Summer Camp!

Do you like working with kids? Do you have an open heart ready to care for others? If you are smiling and thinking "Yes!", we have the perfect opportunity for you to Have FUN and make a difference this summer!

As part of MDA’s lifesaving mission to help kids live longer and grow stronger, MDA provides a summer camp program for kids ages 6-17 - offered at no cost to their families. It is life-changing experience and opens a world of possibilities to kids with neuromuscular diseases.

MDA Summer Camp is a magical place where anything is possible for these special kids, but MDA needs caring people to volunteer as camp counselors. They serve as a "buddy" for the week and participate in activities with the campers, push wheelchairs, lift and transfer youngsters and provide assistance with daily living activities as needed.

In addition to bringing joy to our campers, this is an amazing opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in education, recreation, family social sciences and medical professions and a week of experience working with children living with neuromuscular disease, as well as 140 volunteer hours. MDA staff and the camp medical team provide all the medical training needed for the week. Medical staff is on site for the entire week. Food and accommodation is provided. To apply, please call the MDA office at 415-673-7500. You will receive a link for online application. Interview with MDA staff and background check are required.

We truly can’t do this without the help of caring individuals like you! So call our team today and learn more about the MDA Summer Camp Volunteer program.

When: July 30 th to August 5 th, 2017

Mission Statement

MDA is leading the fight to free individuals -- and the families who love them -- from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that take away physical strength, independence and life. Together with our supporters, we’re helping kids and adults live longer and grow stronger.

Description

The freedom to walk, to talk, to run and play. To laugh, to hug. To eat. To breathe. Each day across the country, these everyday freedoms are taken away from kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that weaken muscle strength and severely limit mobility.

MDA takes a big-picture perspective across neuromuscular diseases to uncover breakthroughs that will accelerate treatments and cures. The power in this research approach is that knowledge and information from one disease can often yield progress in others to speed urgently needed answers for families.

Here are some of MDA’s current highlights:
* Funding about 150 MDA research projects around the world
* Awarded nearly 70 MDA research grants in 2016 with a total funding commitment of more than $16 million
* Contributed to dozens of clinical trials now underway
* In 2016, the FDA approved the first disease-modifying drugs to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
