Mission Statement

Our mission is to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. Experts estimate that as many as one-third of women dying of breast cancer today could be saved without a single new medical breakthrough. That’s why we take a two-pronged approach: first, ensuring that all people have access to, and receive, timely, high-quality breast cancer care. And second, funding the research that will drive new treatments, and ultimately, the cures.

Description

Connecticut has thesecond highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States. That is why the work of Komen is so vital right here in our state, making a critical difference in the lives of women in our communities. There is no other organization in the state that does what we do on a grassroots local level. And the more than 3,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year know they can rely on us- and all of our volunteers, fundraisers, teams and sponsors- to continue our work supporting research, education, screening and treatment. Learn more about Komen and our lifesaving work.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded on a promise made between two sisters - Susan Goodman Komen and Nancy Goodman Brinker. Suzy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, a time when little was known about the disease and it was rarely discussed in public. Before she died at the age of 36, Suzy asked her sister to do everything possible to bring an end to breast cancer. Nancy kept her promise by establishing Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 1982 in Suzy’s memory.

The promise between two sisters has since become the promise of millions. Today, Komen for the Cure is a global leader in the fight against breast cancer. The New England Affiliate of Susan G. Komen joins 124 other Affiliates worldwide and works locally to fulfill the promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.
