3rd Grade Volunteer Assistant Instructor

Ocean Science Explorers Program

Ocean Discovery Institute is an award-winning science education organization that works with San Diego’s most underserved elementary, middle, and high school students to promote science and environmental understanding and action.

Ocean Science Explorers (OSE) is a school and field-based educational initiative that provides early and continued exposure to ocean science. Students and teachers participate in Ocean Science Explorers from the third through sixth grades.

Position Overview:

  • Assist with hands-on science lessons for underserved youth
  • Lead outdoor field experiences at the La Jolla tide pools
  • Lessons focused on intertidal invertebrate adaptions

Position Commitment:

  • One weekday per week (approx. 5 hours) from April through June
    • except for school holidays and breaks
  • Attend two trainings:
    • Saturday, April 8th, 9:00am - 2:00pm
    • May - Date TBD

Description

The programs of Ocean Discovery Institute offer intensive, hands-on learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Programs are offered throughout the year. The programs employ three basic strategies: classroom and field-based programming in partnership with Title 1 schools, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration events.
