The Youth in Public Service and Leadership Summer Program is a new City of Grand Prairie initiative designed to develop high school/ college students for public service and leadership through meaningful service alongside City staff. Participants will not receive any monetary compensation.

Core values: Community engagement, public service, and career/ personal discovery

What it would look like: Over 9 weeks, student volunteers dedicate 20 hours/ week of service in one department. Assignments vary from department to department, and departments are encouraged to give students opportunities for independent assignments that foster their leadership skills and deepen their understanding of public service.

Dates: Monday, June 5 - Friday, Aug. 4, 2017

How would students benefit? How is this different from regular volunteering?

  • Formal service program, competitive application process
  • Workforce experience - resume, application, interview process
  • Professional development working alongside professionals and leaders
  • Supervising staff will complete two evaluations for students over the summer
  • Special recognition at the end of summer

Application requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 16 AND have completed 10th grade by June 5, 2017.

  • Submit a hand-signed Parent Consent Form if 17 or younger and if it is not already in your volunteer account.
  • Submit your latest report card or school transcript.
  • Ask your teacher to complete a Teacher Recommendation Form ( PDF or Word.)
  • All documents (Parent Consent Form, report card/ transcript, Teacher Recommendation Form) should be emailed to volunteer@gptx.org by April 15.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Timeline

  • Saturday, April 15 - Application deadline for students
  • Friday, April 22 - Interview notification deadline
  • Friday, May 5 - Interview completion date
  • Saturday, May 13 - Candidate notification date
