Mission Statement

The mission of the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) has remained true to its founding principles; to save the orangutans of Indonesia through conservation education, outreach initiatives and innovative collaborative programs that inspire and call people to action.

Description

The Orang Utan Republik Foundation is based in Santa Monica, California and conducts outreach and fundraising events in the United States. Its major impact takes place in Indonesia where local organizations implement OURF's education and conservation programs.

Domestic Outreach involves participating in events including Earthday as well as Orangutan Caring Week in November. Other activities are planned and conducted by volunteers. OURF works with schools to enroll and inspire students to learn about orangutans and take action to conserve the species.

OURF works with the Sustainable Green Sumatra Foundation (YSHL) to implement the Community Education and Conservation Program (CECP). The CECP program delivers education to villages near Gunung Leuser National Park to reduce conflict between the villagers and orangutans. The CECP program also provides training and assistance in organic farming and waste management at the village level as well as providing ways to improve livelihood as an alternative to destructive practices.

OURF works with the Orangutan Information Center in Medan, Sumatra, Yayasan Palung in West Kalimantan, and Borneo Nature Foundation in Central Kalimantan in implementing the Orangutan Caring Scholarship program. OURF raises and aggregates funds contributed by donors to provide multi-year tuition for Indonesian college and university students in the fields of Biology, Forestry and Veterinary Science. The scholarships are given in a competitive manner by the implementing organizations.
