Shades of San Francisco is a community history project of the San Francisco Public Library that began in 1999 with the goal of preserving the history of San Francisco's many diverse communities. This year, members of San Francisco’s Filipino community are invited to bring their personal photograph collections to the San Francisco Public Library’s Main Library. Donors will share photographs of themselves, their friends, and families that illustrate the history of the community. Photographs will be scanned and added to the San Francisco History Center photo collection. We are particularly interested in photos of community members at home, at work, playing sports, attending celebrations, organizational meetings, and more.

Volunteers (of all backgrounds!) are needed to greet potential contributors, record preliminary information, assist with photo selection and documentation, visit with donors while their photos are being scanned, assist digitizing technicians with scanning and keeping track of records, and maintain the refreshment area. All of these volunteer activities will make Photo Day a success! We are looking for detail-oriented, friendly people with an interest in photography, archiving, history, and/or community.

Shades of San Francisco is a 2-day volunteer commitment. All volunteers must attend a 1-day training session on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (lunch provided) led by the San Francisco City Archivist and San Francisco History Center Photo Curator. Photo Day will take place on May 13, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
