The Urban Ministry Center is looking for energetic, positive individuals to join our UMC volunteer family. Volunteering gives back to the community, helps those most in need, and can transform your life. Our volunteer family lends their heart, time, and skills to help us achieve our mission of ending homelessness.

What can I gain from volunteering?

Knowledge- Volunteering at UMC exposes you to the diverse experiences of our homeless neighbors and the issues of poverty- this can transform your views and change not only their life, but your own as well.

Skills- UMC is an ever-evolving organization that requires our volunteers to be flexible and attentive to detail. Our volunteers gain many transferable skills such as multi-tasking, effective communication, and management skills.

Community- We encourage our volunteers to build relationships with the neighbors that they serve. Being genuine, respectful, and mindful of the challenges our homeless neighbors face every day while working with other volunteers brings us together as a community.

Fulfillment- When our volunteers leave each day, they know they have made a difference in someone else's life.

So, what services are offered?

Urban Ministry Center provides basic services for anyone in need. It's our way of affirming the dignity of each homeless neighbor who may need a hot shower, clean clothes, a phone call or message from family and the support needed to take the next step out of homelessness. These services provide additional opportunities for homeless individuals to connect with caring volunteers and staff, enabling further contact with the continuum of care and services in Charlotte. We are in need of volunteers with weekday and weekend availability that can commit to at least six months of service (and preferably long term). At this time we are not able to accommodate school service requirements or court-related community service. We require our individual volunteers to be 18 years old or older (unless accompanied by an adult).

Shower Attendant

Mail Sorter

Mission Statement

The Urban Ministry Center is an interfaith organization dedicated to bringing the community together to end homelessness, one life at a time.

Description

Since 1994, with the collaboration of community partners, we strive to meet the basic needs of our fellow Charlottean neighbors to alleviate poverty and end homelessness. Managed by dedicated staff and volunteers, our soup kitchen is open 365 days of the year to serve lunch to 150-300 individuals. Combining the efforts of staff and volunteers, those in need can use our facility for basic services such as showers, laundry, phones, and mail services. Our team of volunteer counselors connect individuals to our community partners for resources such as food referrals, clothing assistance, housing, and employment resources. Volunteers and those seeking services can participate in our CommunityWorks program which encourages self-expression and empowerment through art, soccer, gardening, and running. We also offer educational opportunities for community members to learn more about homelessness and its social implications through presentations to your group and simulations such as Walk in My Shoes. Thanks to community donations, o ur Homeless to Homes pilot project raised funds to build and run Moore Place (opened in 2012) and a larger HousingWorks program. Our HousingWorks program operates under the HousingFirst model which houses those who are most at-risk first and then provides services to maintain housing. This includes working with a social worker to address any lingering problems throughout this transition. The Urban Ministry Center hopes to bring together all Charlotteans to inspire innovative ways of addressing homelessness and poverty in our city.
