tech-reach will be holding basic computer skills classes for adults and companion youth computer camps for Spanish speakers this summer.

Classes are on Tuesday & Thursday evenings, starting in June of 2017. Each class is approximately 8 hours long and spread across 3-4 evenings. The adult classes are for true beginners and sets the foundation for future learning in computers and covers topics such as: computer vocabulary, hardware, software, OS, how to find way around Windows environment, using the desktop, searching and browsing the internet safely, and other beginner topics. We need volunteers to support the adults in the classrooms. A lot of patience is required for this work and believing in hands on learning is critical. We also need support to translate the handouts and pre-post tests.

While parents are learning, we will provide education computer activities for their chilren. Together, volunteers will search and document appropriate safe and educational learning games and activities for the youth. Volunteers will work with the Director to develop a new curriculum, engaging the youth in the use of technology (online platforms, hardware, software, digital cameras, presentation equipment, etc.).

Mission Statement

The Mission of Elder High School is to lead young men to serve God, others, and to pursue "Altiora" according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. (Altiora~Latin for to strive for the higher things) Demonstrating their motto to strive for higher things, Elder founded its community outreach program, tech-reach, in 2001 when the school’s new technology center was built, as a means of connecting to and serving the community. The mission of the tech-reach program is to leverage the technological, educational, and human resources of Elder High School in order to enhance the capacity of the people and community of Price Hill and surrounding area. We collaborate with local institutional leaders to offer educational opportunities that allow our community to seek higher things (Altiora) including: find & maintain gainful employment, strengthen skills & competencies, accomplish goals and overcome obstacles, discover personal fulfillment, and build leadership skills.

Description

tech-reach supports its Price Hill neighbors through adult education, youth programming, and hosting of community & capacity building events. Our evening adult education includes literacy, GED, computer courses, and more. We support our local schools with annual educator professional development workhsops and ongoing school-based programming for parents. We host events that support our community, including a FREE tax prep program that helps our neighbors avoid tax prep fees and assures maximum returns including credits. During the summer, we host computer camps for neighborhood youth in collaboration with other local organizations, in hopes of reducing summer learning loss.
