FIRST Global's mission is to convince the youth (and leaders) of the world to appreciate the tools of STEM, and to show them that if they learn to communicate, cooperate, and work together, they will be able to make exciting innovations in areas ranging from access to clean water to food insecurity that, if solved, will make the world a better place for everyone. The 2017 FIRST Global Challenge is the first of its kind--an international robot olympics with one high school team from every country invited to participate. To date, over 150 nations have committed to attendin g the global event taking place in Washington, D.C. this July.

The FIRST Global Challenge is an annual robotics event that addresses one of the 14 Grand Challenges identified by the national engineering academies of the United States, United Kingdom, and China. Each year, a different issue of global importance will take center stage as the theme of that year’s FIRST Global Challenge, which will be held in a different nation every year. The theme of this year’s Challenge is providing access to clean water.

Participating teams range from rural parts of Latin and South America (Peru, Honduras, Bolivia) to violence plagued and war-torn nations in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia (Mali, Libya, Iraq, Yemen), to the industrialized powerhouses of Europe and Asia (United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, China, Japan and South Korea), as well as a team of Syrian refugees. We are also proud to have several all girl teams representing their countries in a field where women are grossly underrepresented!

FIRST Global is needed now more than ever because the world is becoming a fragile environment where billions are becoming increasingly dependent on technology - whether for water, food, or the environment - and will require significant innovation to sustain. And now, FIRST Global needs you!

We are looking for volunteers, 16+, to help at our event. We have positions ranging from robot inspectors to Team Ambassadors, to Registration. You will witness history in the making, and see the excitement, inspiration, and ingenuity these incredible students have. The event is from July 16th - 18th, but we need volunteers for certain positions starting on July 14th and ending on the 18th. Different positions have different reporting times than others. This is a great way to meet others passionate about STEM and STEM education, as well as learn about different cultures.

Please visit www.first.global/volunteer for available positions and descriptions, as well as a sign-up form.

Mission Statement

The mission of FIRST Global is to inspire science and technology leadership and innovation in young people from all nations in order to increase understanding, impress the importance of cooperation, address the world’s most pressing issues, and improve quality of life for all. This mission is accomplished through the FIRST Global Challenge that culminates with an international robotics game, which will rotate annually among different nation’s capitals each year. By showing the youth of the world that if they learn how to communicate, cooperate, and work together using the tools of science and engineering to find solutions to the world’s grand challenges - water, energy, security, medicine, food, and education - they will learn how to work with each other, trust each other, and become part of a truly global community.

Description

FIRST Global organizes a yearly international robotics challenge to ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among the more than two billion youths across the world.

Established as a US-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity to provide the framework for an "Olympics"-style robotics challenge, FIRST Global invites one team from every nation to participate in an international robotics event that builds bridges between high school students with different backgrounds, languages, religions, and customs.

By bringing these future STEM leaders together in an engaging and collaborative competition that drives home the importance, excitement, and applicability of STEM education, FIRST Global inspires students to learn the skills they will need to make the discoveries their parents and grandparents would consider miracles, impossibilities, or just plain science fiction.

FIRST Global also strives to convince the various national governments and organizations of the world to embrace STEM education, and to support it by investing in their young adults that will soon begin to make their marks in the world.
