The Board supports the work of Beacon of Hope and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to- day operations are led by Beacon of Hope’s CEO/Executive Director, the Board President relationship is a partnership and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

LEADERSHIP, GOVERNANCE, AND OVERSIGHT

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO/Executive Director as she/he develops and implements the BOH strategic plan.
  • Regular communication and offering of support and advice by checking-in with the CEO/ED.
  • Regular performing actions on the part of the board that elevate the mission and financial stability of the agency and that serve to increase and build on the efforts of the CEO/ED.
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by BOH for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics, reviewing agenda and support materials for board and committee meetings.
  • Approving BOH annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions, being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO/ED.
  • Assisting the CEO/ED and Board President in identifying and recruiting other Board Members.
  • Partnering with the CEO/ED and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments.
  • Representing BOH to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Ensuring BOH’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities that BOH serves.

FUNDRAISING

Board Members will consider BOH a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So, that BOH can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, companies, organizations, and individuals, BOH expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. Board Members further commit to bringing to BOH major donors and funding of at least $5,000.00 preferably $10,000.00 per calendar year. This annual commitment is reviewed and reaffirmed by the Board at its annual meeting.

BOARD TERMS/PARTICIPATION

BOH Board Members serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings are held monthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about our mission and vision and who has a track record of board leadership or has considerable experience in a management capacity. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the non-profit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members and major donors.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the non-profit sector
  • A commitment to and understanding of BOH’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience.
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of all clients of Beacon of Hope.

Service of BOH’s Board of Directors is without remuneration except as permitted by a vote of the Board to reimburse for certain costs in relation to Board duties.
