Earth Day is a big day for us and we need our volunteers to help make it a success! Over 3,000 guests will visit the Greenway on Earth Day and we need all hands on deck. Interested in helping to plan the event? Join our committee! (See "Earth Day Planning Committee" in assignments)

Here are all available positions on Earth Day:

1. PARKING ATTENDANT: Help us greet our guests and be the face of the Greenway as folks come in to Earth Day! Parking attendants will help direct cars to utilize the space in our parking areas.

2. KIDS ZONE: Love working with kids? Come help us out in the Kids Zone! All our afterschool FLYERS sites will be there, as well as our preschool. Each site will have a fun, hands-on activity focused around recycling and reusing items in a creative way! Some past projects have included homemade toothpaste and paper bead necklaces. Help with a craft, interact with families and help us tell the Greenway's story!

3. CREEK CROSSERS: One of the most interesting volunteer positions on Earth Day. You will need some waders (which we can provide, let us know!)or water shoes of your choice. We will have wagon rides coming down to the creek. This is a popular activity for families, but crossing the swinging bridge with a stroller can be difficult. You'll be there to help families across by carrying the stroller (not their child!) across the creek for them. You will also help ensure the safety of the children who play in the creek (no rock throwing, that kind of thing!

4. LEAD-LINE HORSE RIDES: One of the most popular activities we have at Earth Day! Help young children ride a horse for the first time or the hundredth. Volunteers will assist by leading horses, walking alongside children on horseback and by helping put helmets on children.

5. DRINK SALES: Help raise money for the Greenway by selling our thirsty guests cold sodas and water. (no alcohol served on Earth Day) We'll need helping selling drinks out of the Coke Trailer all day. Bonus is that you'll get a free drink while you work!

6. AMPITHEATER VOLUNTEERS: We will have a lot of fun activities happening around the Comporium Amphitheater and we'll need help making sure things go smoothly. Help us with the opening ceremony, the Recycled Runway Competition, the concert or all three!

7. TREE COOKIE CRAFTS: As trees fall on the Greenway or when we build new trails, we try our hardest to reuse the tree. In this effort, we create "tree cookie" cutouts that kids and adults alike can use for necklaces or drink coasters. We use the Greenway logo branding iron to permanently leave our mark. Volunteers help oversee this process.

8. CABIN DOCENTS (Graham Cabin & Nature Center): Full of history, we like to open up our historic cabins and venues to the public on Earth Day. Without our volunteers this wouldn't be possible. We are thankful for volunteers who are willing to open the doors and welcome the public in.

9. GOLF CART DRIVERS: Assist guests as they arrive with complimentary golf cart rides to the event grounds from the Dairy Barn Parking Lot. Golf cart volunteers must be 16 and older.

10. CLICKER COUNTER: Help the Greenway count an accurate amount of event guests by using the handheld "clicker counter". This volunteer position is flexible in location but it works best to stay at the entrance or along the event trail.

Mission Statement

To provide stewardship and protect the cultural, ecological and scenic features of the land, while offering recreational and educational opportunities that promote the health and wellness of the community.

Description

Leroy Springs & Company has been providing recreational and educational opportunities to the communities surrounding Springs Industries facilities for over 60 years. In 1995, the Anne Springs Close Greenway, a 2,100 acre nature preserve in Fort Mill, South Carolina, was dedicated to the public to serve as a natural buffer from urban development and a place for countless activities - from hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, to picnics, kayaking and more.

The land was donated by the children of Anne Springs Close to honor her lifelong commitment to recreation and the environment. The Greenway is a not-for-profit entity which receives no ongoing tax dollars to build, maintain or operate its programs, trails and facilities. Owned and managed by Leroy Springs & Company, the Greenway is funded in part by memberships, program fees and generous donations from individuals and corporations.
