Homeless Connect Event
hosted by the City of Newport News Department of Human Services

This one day event will bring nearly 200 homeless adults to one venue to receive immediate services and support in financial, wellness, and empowerment services areas. Participants include the Department of Human Services, Veteran's Affairs, Southeastern Virginia Health Systems, Lion's Club, and more!

When:
Wednesday, January 23, 2019
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM (2 hour shifts available)

Where:
Doris Miller Community Center
2814 Wickham Ave., Newport News, VA 23607


Volunteer Needs:

  • Event Set-up (set-up starts at 8:30 AM)
  • Food station (distribution of food, maintenance, clean-up)
  • Greeting guests
  • Check-in/ registration
  • Supporting the participants in navigating the stations at the event
  • Volunteer station
  • Event clean-up (goes until 1:30 PM)
  • Administrative support


*Groups and individuals are welcome to volunteer!
* Great opportunity for anyone interested in the human services, social services, community outreach, homeless issues fields!

Attire: Pants with flat shoes. White shirts preferred but not required.

Description

Volunteer Services Program - The goal of the Volunteer Services Program is to expand the services and capabilities of the Department of Social Services by utilizing the skills and efforts of volunteers to provide direct services, administrative services, and clerical services.

The Department relies on volunteers to:

  • Enrich and extend the routine services being offered
  • Supplement the work of the staff
  • Perform a direct service to our clients
  • Serve as a liaison between the community and the Department
  • Afford the citizens of Newport News the opportunity to affect the environment in which they live
