ORGANIZATION: GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis)

  • 5 people are interested

Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) was founded in 1981 in response to an epidemic that was ravaging communities in New York City. This grassroots crisis response became the world's first AIDS organization, and GMHC is now an internationally-recognized organization that services individuals living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and advocates for public health reforms.

GMHC is looking for two legal interns for the 2017 summer session. The summer internship is an opportunity for a public interest minded law student to learn the inner workings of a general practice while supporting the work of attorneys and legal casehandlers who assist people living with HIV/AIDS primarily with immigration, housing, benefits, and estate planning. Work includes but is not limited to legal research and writing, conducting client intake, assisting staff at hearings and forums, drafting motions and letters, and other legal support work.

The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:

  • Legal research and writing
  • Client intake
  • Client follow up
  • Litigation support

In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all of the following:

  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Client contact/interviewing skills
  • Commitment to working in public interest
  • Passion for serving PLWHA and/or LBTOIA

At least one year of law school completed preferred.

Proficiency in a second language in addition to English preferred.

This is a full-time internship from 9am to 5pm or 10am to 6pm that runs for ten weeks starting on Tuesday, May 30th, 2017, and ending on Friday, August 4, 2017.

Internship opportunities are open to qualified individuals affiliated with an accredited academic institution for academic credit only. Since we are a nonprofit environment, our internships are unpaid, but we will support academic institution requirements for students by completing all paperwork required by the intern’s school or program.

To apply, email your resume and a brief cover letter to Shelley Levine at ShelleyL@gmhc.org.
