Foundation for Letters

The Foundation for Letters (FFL) provides urban students and schools with access to innovative writing-intensive academic and enrichment programs that are designed, staffed and funded by volunteers from the literary community and beyond. FFL also helps underserved communities of schools form their own networks of external support that form partnerships, raise funds and engage volunteers who are committed to increasing student engagement with writing.

FFL seeks volunteer Board members to help carry out this mission.

Fifteen years ago, the Advisory Board of the Bronx Academy of Letters (a new public high school funded with Gates Foundation funds) was formed to provide educational resources and enrichment opportunities to one small school in the Bronx, NY.

The vision of the Board was that in urban public schools, where resources were limited, external support for literacy education could provide improved academic performance, increased college readiness and better global citizenship among students. The Board supported and implemented programs at the Bronx Academy of Letters that stressed increased fluency in communication, through immersion with the "word" - written, spoken and performed.

After more than a decade of experience serving as the primary external support organization for Bronx Letters, the Advisory Board incorporated in 2012 and formed FFL, which continued its support of Bronx Letters, until August 2014, when it expanded the reach of its work beyond a single school. In 2017, FFL is working to provide urban schools with a blueprint for how to positively impact their communities through external support for literacy-based academic and enrichment programs.

Description

OUR FOCUS

Promoting Writing Engagement

Environments that emphasize the value of the written word help provide students with a path to improved literacy. FFL fosters these environments by supporting a variety of writing programs, ranging from poetry to fiction, essays, journalism as well as spoken word and other genres.

Increasing College Readiness

Increased fluency with the word bears a close connection to success in high school, college, and beyond. FFL supports programs that introduce students at an early age to the critical importance of a college education. These programs help provide a path to attending and succeeding in college, and help better position urban students for educational and professional success.

Improving Global Citizenship

Students in underserved urban neighborhoods who are consistently exposed to the world beyond their present circumstances develop a thirst for further education and intellectual engagement that makes pursuing a college education attractive. FFL supports programs that use engagement with writing as a tool for improved global understanding. These programs are also designed to give the students a sense of belonging in today’s global community.
