Professional Bike Mechanic - Refugee Event

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: World Relief Seattle

World Relief Seattle, Washington's largest refugee resettlement organization, is looking for a bike mechanic for this year's SEA-TRI-KAN bike tour fundraiser across Washington state (worldreliefseattle.org/STK). We'll have between 45-50 bikes involved in this year's event covering 400 miles in 5 days!

Here's what we're looking for in a volunteer mechanic:

· A professional. We need someone with real expertise who has completed a bike mechanic training program or who has worked as a mechanic in a bike shop.

· Willing/able to be away from work and home from June 21-25. We've also got an incentive to help you convince the bike shop you work at to continue paying you while you're away from the shop: we'll make the shop a "major sponsor" of the ride..

· Flexibility. The mechanic can bring along their own bike to ride if interested, but they would do so with the knowledge that they could be scooped up by a support vehicle and called upon to repair a bike at any time during the ride.

· Service-minded. The last two years, mechanics have spent time checking and optimizing bikes before and after the day's ride is done, so the mechanic won't have quite as much time to socialize as ride participants do. We also ask the mechanic - when there is time - to help out with other minor logistics such as helping to set out lunch, unloading bags from the vehicle, and handing out water to riders.

· Interested in supporting the cause of refugee employment. We ask all ride volunteers to participate in the fundraising portion of this event by raising $500. This helps us offset the costs incurred by bringing volunteers along (lodging, food, etc), since volunteers don't have to pay any fees to participate in the event as riders must. Fundraising tips, tools, and guidance will be provided, and there is no penalty if the mechanic is unable to fundraise the $500.

Mission Statement

World Relief is a Christian organization that helps refugees fleeing political, social and religious persecution begin new lives in the Seattle area. Our mission is to empower the Church to serve the most vulnerable. Our vision is to see refugees become fully-functioning, integrated, and vibrant participants in society by helping them conquer the many hurdles along that path.

Description

World Relief works with volunteers, local churches, the community, the U.S. Department of State, and other NGOs to help refugees begin new lives in the Puget Sound area. Our goal is for refugees to become self-sufficient by empowering and aiding them in their journey of building a new life in America. Under a federal contract, we provide casework time, English language instruction, and job placement assistance, among other services. In the past year, we've welcomed more than 800 refugees to Seattle from countries as diverse as Burma, Iraq, Bhutan, Somalia, and Eritrea.

With World Relief's services and the help of a local volunteer network, these newcomers are able to build peaceful and productive new lives in America.
