Painting help needed for historical ship museum

ORGANIZATION: RICHMOND MUSEUM ASSN INC

Deckhand crew photo

We are looking for deck hands to work aboard the historic SS Red Oak Victory Ship!

Our deck crew is a vital part of our organization and helps support the restoration and maintenance of our 75 year old vessel. We are working towards our goal of being able to re-light off the engines and operate the ship out on open waters again, as well as serve as an alternative event and historical educational space.

We're currently looking for volunteers to help us complete painting projects for our interior decks.

This is a rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience to work on a National Historical Landmark and 1 of 3 last remaining WWII Victory ships in the world! Relevant Mariner experience, or previous experience in restoration, historical preservation, or other experience a plus but not necessary. All trainings provided onboard.

Due to the unique nature of the work environment, this opportunity is best suited for individuals who are able to perform job functions in a range of motions, the ability to lift a minimum of 35lbs with/or without assistance, the ability to use ladders or work in small or cramped areas for periods of time. Because our vessel is an original WWII model we cannot accommodate ADA occupancy at this time.

We are looking forward to meeting you!

Description

The Richmond Musuem Association (RMA) operates the Richmond Museum of History, located in a historic Carnegie Library. The Museum is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4PM for a small admission fee. The largest artifact in the museum collection is the SS Red Oak Victory, a Victory Ship built in 1944 for use in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. The ship is open for docent lead and self guided tours on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-3.

The Richmond Museum Association (RMA) offers volunteer opportunities for people of all walks of life. Our community of like-minded volunteers works toward a common goal to inspire people through Richmond history. RMA will make you feel welcome whether you seek to develop professional skills, deepen your own personal interests or just want to feel more connected to the past. The Museum and SS Red Oak Victory depend on volunteers with a wide range of skills so we can accomplish goals like operating the ship under her own power or ensuring every local student visits the Museum once during elementary school.
