RICHMOND MUSEUM ASSN INC

Love to restore relics and keep history alive for generations? We have volunteer deck department opportunities aboard a historic ship in the Richmond shipyard! Interested historic ships, the history of Richmond and the Kaiser shipyards, military history from WW II, Rosie the Riveter, the Merchant Marine, the Korean War, Vietnam, or all things nautical?

Are you interested in: understanding, preserving, maintaining and operating ship’s mechanical lifting equipment and in maintaining ship’s safety equipment? Interested in learning and training with ship’s firefighting equipment and in training with crew to handle emergency events while on the ship? These include Man Over-board, Fire Fighting, and to safely Evacuate Visitors from ship. Able to drive a forklift or interested in learning how to operate a lift truck safely? Learning to prepare, restore and paint the ship’s metal surfaces and equipment. Chip surfaces with chipping hammers, air-powered needle guns and scraping tools. We are also looking for welders.

Then this is your volunteer gig!

We have a WWII Victory ship in need of restoration and a dedicated crew who are restoring her. The SSROV is an living connection to the past 70+ years on the SF Bay where today we hold events, tours and big dreams of lighting off the engines and building an alternative art venue. Work is done outside and within the ship with beautiful views, fresh air, great conversation, and an amazing piece of history to interact with.

The SS Red Oak Vicory is open to the public on weekends and two days during the week (Tuesday and Thursday) from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. The environment is casual and the hours are flexible.

The crew has been working since 1998 to bring the ship back to life and we are hopeful to be able to light off the boilers in 2018 for the first time since 1968 when the ROV made its last voyage from Viet Nam to San Francisco.
