Mission Statement
International Women in Jazz, Inc. (IWJ) is a non-profit organization committed to supporting women jazz artists and related professionals, and to fostering a greater awareness of the diverse contributions women make to jazz, worldwide [501(c)3]. Through its programs, IWJ provides information and assistance to its members, thus standing dedicated to actively ensuring a place for women as a vital part of the past, present, and future of jazz.
Description
Through the years, IWJ has presented concerts, networking events, seminars, workshops and jam sessions. One of the recurring events has been IWJ monthly "First Mondays" where members share music with one another, and newcomers can be introduced to IWJ. Another is the monthly jam session which gives the musicians an opportunity to play with a rhythm section and share their talent with others. This event has been open to the community. Our Youth in Action program presents young adults to age 17 in a professional musical setting. Since 1996, IWJ has co-produced concerts in association with Universal Jazz Coalition and Saint Peter’s Church and produced concerts as part of the JVC Jazz Festival or the NYC Parks and Recreation Department. Since 2007, IWJ, in partnership with the Jazz Committee of Saint Peter’s Church, has produced a 3-day Women in Jazz Festival. Other partnerships included Jazz Foundation, Clark Terry Foundation, Duke Ellington Society.
