ORGANIZATION: 826LA

Working in classrooms with 826LA!

826LA, a non-profit writing and tutoring organization, is looking for volunteers to go into classrooms all around Los Angeles, in neighborhoods including Baldwin Village, Boyle Heights, Downtown LA, East LA, Mar Vista, South LA, Venice, Watts, and West LA.

826LA collaborates with teachers to craft all projects, which are designed to engage students while targeting the built-in curriculum. 826LA works with teachers on whatever writing their students are doing-persuasive and analytical essays, short stories, autobiographies, poems, plays for stage and screen, and those intimidating college-application essays.

Volunteer Role/Responsibilities: In-School volunteers spend time in middle and high school classrooms throughout the city of Los Angeles. You’ll be responsible for working one-on-one with students on writing projects ranging from personal statements to essays on Catcher in the Rye and personal beliefs, and everything in between. You are there to support students in understanding the writing prompt and to encourage their ideas. It’s a lot of "That’s a really interesting idea, can you tell me more?" and "That’s a great thought; write that sentence down!"

About 826LA

Location:

1714 W. Sunset Blvd., LOS ANGELES, CA 90026, US

Mission Statement

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after school tutoring, reading and creative writing workshops, in-schools projects, and field trips! All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice. We have two brick and mortars in Mar Vista and Echo Park, as well as three Writers Rooms at Roosevelt High School, at Manual Arts High School, and at Venice High School.

Description

We have a high need for volunteers to support our day time Field Trips and In-Schools programs. You can help facilitate brainstorming sessions and share-outs, type up student ideas, and support the editing process. You'll also have the opportunity to work one-on-one or with a small group of students, on various writing projects ranging from personal statement essays, Catcher in the Rye essays, poetry, creative writing, and everything in between.
