Summer Camp for Children with Muscle Disease- Nurses Needed!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)

As part of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s mission to save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease, MDA provides a summer camp program for children ages 6-17 - offered at no cost to their families.

MDA summer camp opens up a world of possibilities and hope to kids with muscle disease who often experience limitations in life and daily activities. MDA summer camp is a magical place where anything is possible for these special kids, but MDA needs caring people to volunteer as camp medical staff to make this happen. Camp counselors serve as a "buddy" to all campers during the week and help the kids to participate in activities. But we also need a medical staff (RN, LPN, PA, or MD eligible) on campsite all week to ensure a safe and healthy week at camp.

This year, we will be hosting a few camps for kids located in the Metro New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania area, which will take place at the following locations and weeks. Since all of our camps will take place in New Jersey, all volunteer nurses must be licensed in NJ.

Happiness is Camping in Hardwick, NJ- June 10 th through June 17 th, 2017

Camp Oakhurst in Oakhurst, NJ- August 5th through August 11th, 2017

Happiness is Camping in Hardwick, NJ- August 13th through August 19th, 2017

Happiness is Camping in Hardwick, NJ- August 20th through August 26 th, 2017

This is a sleep away camp, so nurses are required to stay overnight. You will be provided with a bed in a nurses' cabin, and all food will be provided for the week.

Camp is a place where a kid can truly be a kid and forget all limitations. With your help, we can make this possible!

Mission Statement

Families are at the heart of MDA's mission. We wake up every morning to create more hope and answers for families living with muscular dystrophy and related diseases that take away physical strength and mobility. We do this by finding research breakthroughs across diseases, caring for kids and adults from day one and empowering families with services and support in hometowns across America.

Description

MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private-sector organization in the world. MDA scientists are in the forefront of gene therapy research and have uncovered the genetic defects responsible for several forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease), childhood spinal muscular atrophy, and several other neuromuscular conditions.

The Association's comprehensive service program includes medical examinations, flu shots, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters and assistance with purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces.

MDA was created in 1950 by a group of adults with muscular dystrophy, parents of children with muscular dystrophy, and a physician-scientist studying the disorder. Since its earliest days it has been energized by its number-one volunteer and national chairman, entertainer Jerry Lewis.

The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. MDA seeks no government grants, United Way funding or fees from those it serves.
