"Camp Odayin gave me back the childhood that heart disease took from me."

- Anders, camper for 11 years

At our medically-staffed camps in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Camp Odayin provides opportunities for children with heart disease to build connections and try new things. Thanks in part to generous volunteers, camper families pay only what they're able and there's always an option to pay $0. We are currently seeking volunteer cabin counselors and nurses for our Summer Camps in Elkhorn, WI and Crosslake, MN.

During five days of overnight Summer Camp, each cabin of 6-8 campers is supported by two cabin counselors and a nurse. Nurses distribute medications and provide first aid as needed. All volunteers have an opportunity to play while participating in activities with children/teens, encouraging growth, and serving as positive role models. No medical knowledge or experience is needed for cabin counselors. A training session prior to camp and a commitment for the full five day camp session is required of all volunteers. For those traveling from afar to camp, up to $300 in travel expense reimbursement (accommodations, gas, flights, etc) is available.

Camp Odayin welcomes people of any race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. We are excited to receive applications from a broad spectrum of individuals.

The volunteer application for our programs is now available and we invite you to apply by April 15th. Nurse and returning staff applicants are accepted on a rolling basis. Therefore, the positions for certain sessions may fill prior to the deadline.

Mission Statement

Camp Odayin provides fun, safe and supportive camp experiences and community building opportunities for young people with heart disease and their families.

Description

Founded in 2001 by Executive Director Sara Meslow, Camp Odayin serves young people impacted by congenital heart disease and their families. The name 'Odayin’ comes from the Ojibwe word for 'heart’.

Residential Camp allows campers in grades 1-11 to enjoy swimming, boating, arts and crafts, volleyball, horseback riding, nature, basketball, and music in a safe, medically-supervised environment during a five day experience.

Family Camp is an opportunity for families with a child with heart disease age birth to 12th grade to come together for fun, education, support and camaraderie. There are two Friday to Sunday sessions hosted in the Midwest.

Winter Camp offers Residential Camp or Day Camp campers who attended the previous summer the chance to reconnect and experience snowshoeing, broomball, and sledding over a three day weekend.

The Moms Retreat is a time for moms of young people with heart disease to connect for support, education and empowerment. The Saturday to Sunday retreat includes meals, lodging, optional spa and yoga activities, and fabulous guest speakers.

Dads Day is a day of outdoor recreation to build camaraderie and connection between dads of children with heart disease.

Ticker Talk is a free, online Camp Odayin meet up for heart kids in grades 1-12. The hour together is a mini camp experience, full of campy-fun and interactive trivia, games, speakers and more.
