Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with pre-K-12 students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage and encourage their progress on a project.

When his beloved older brother starts acting strangely, a boy learns that his love for drawing is a way to process the challenges he and his family face from his brother’s addiction. Inspired by Zeta Elliott’s powerful story Bird, these sixth-grade students will write a poem about how they have had to overcome obstacles. Writing coaches will guide them in reaching their final drafts.

Behind the Book is a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula and meet Common Core Learning Standards, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they teach a genre of writing and guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book. BtB programs have a successful record of building comprehension skills and motivating engaged readers at schools around the city.
