Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with pre-K-12 students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage and encourage their progress on a project.
This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Crown Heights. To volunteer, please reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org:
Program 2412IH-W
- Tuesday, March 28th, 2017
- 9:30 - 11:00 AM
- Field Trip Mentor
Second-graders read two of Isabel Hill’s architectural picture books. With a focus on Urban Animals, which highlights the fantastic assortment of animals hiding in building details, students will be accompanied by volunteers as they tour their school’s neighborhood to observe and photograph architectural elements. Writing coaches on April 4th (please see posting for that date) will guide them as they edit an informational paragraph about the image they’ve selected. Their writing and photos will be published in a book.
