Change a Life - Become a Host Family!

American Councils for International Education is seeking caring families or individuals in the Laramie community to serve as welcoming host families for one month this summer to Russian undergraduate students who will be attending the University of Wyoming during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Designed to foster greater cultural understanding between our countries at a time of growing tension, the YEAR Program (Year of Exchange in America for Russians) will provide full university scholarships to approximately 70 Russian students who have outstanding academic records, excellent English, and a strong interest in learning about U.S. culture. Three to five of this year’s top scholarship recipients will study at the University of Wyoming from August 2017 to June 2018.

Before beginning their academic year, YEAR students will participate in month-long homestays with local host families from mid-July to mid-August. During the homestay, host families support YEAR students in their acclimation to the new community through immersion in family and local activities. Students and host families learn from each other through a cultural exchange while creating lasting relationships. After the completion of the homestay, all YEAR participants move into on-campus dormitories to begin the academic year. Students and hosts are encouraged to maintain close contact throughout the year and to continue spending time together. Host families play a significant role in the YEAR Program as they are able to guide participants' through their first month of living in the U.S. while also providing the opportunity to build meaningful cross-cultural relationships and promote cultural awareness in their community. Host families in return receive a rewarding and memorable experience as well a new family member.

Families and individuals as diverse as America itself can host YEAR students. We ask only that they be open to new cultural perspectives and provide their student with a comfortable bed, daily meals, and friendly conversation. All hosts will receive a $300 stipend to support them in the costs of hosting.

No one changes the world the way host families do. Are you ready to embrace a new life experience? For more information on how to welcome a YEAR student into your home, write us at YEAR@americancouncils.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
