Exciting things are happening at the New York Aquarium as we prepare for the opening of Ocean Wonders: SHARKS! in 2018. We are looking for enthusiastic & committed volunteers to join our growing team!

Education Volunteers engage and educate aquarium guests in a variety of ways. Whether they are connecting people to animals and nature at the park's touch pool, exploring conservation stories through interpretation at exhibits, or taking on active roles in conservation by assisting with campaigns- education volunteers are vital to the WCS mission to save wildlife and wild places worldwide.

As an education volunteer, you will have the opportunity to meet individuals from around the world and join a family of fellow volunteers, staff, and wildlife experts who share a passion for our natural world. You can help in a variety of ways to staff exhibits, teach visitors about marine conservation, and assist at events and education programs.

Education volunteer programs are open to:
  • Working and Retired Adults
  • Seniors
  • College/Grad Students
  • Teens who are at least 15 years of age or older

Play Partner Education Volunteers engage aquarium guests by facilitating drop-in activities with families at Touch Pools, Ocean Adventure stations, and Nature Play sites. Play Partner Education Volunteers will assist children and caregivers in free play exploration.

What are some of the responsibilities?
  • Help facilitate fun, interactive and engaging activities at Ocean Adventure stations
  • Facilitate animal encounters at the aquarium's Touch Pool
  • Facilitate nature-based/ nature play activities

Play Partner Volunteers should:

  • Have an Enthusiasm for working with young children and their caregivers
  • Have an Appreciation for hands-on, creative activities
  • Have a Fun, welcoming personality
  • Not mind getting messy/dirty
  • Be Comfortable with handling live invertebrates
  • Have the Ability to kneel and sit on the ground and be outdoors in varying temperatures
Commitment
  • Attend two days of training
  • Volunteers commit to serving a minimum 2-4 shifts per week or month (depending on season).
  • Full day or ½ day shifts.
  • Flexible scheduling
  • We have shifts available Sundays through Saturdays (7 days). Mostly Morning shifts with some Afternoon shifts available.
  • Volunteers self-select each month the days and shifts they wish to volunteer.

The New York Aquarium is a 14 acre living museum that presents to our visitors living treasures that once lost can never be recreated. The aquarium provides an enjoyable and educationa experience for the whole family to enjoy. Pacific walruses, sandtiger sharks, sea otters, and 10,000 other species call this place home.
