Mobile Device Ninja - Ticketing & Store Sales aboard Battleship IOWA!

This is a front line customer service position that requires a high degree of comfort and facility with various mobile devices. Located on the main deck of the battleship, the person in this position handles all touchless ticketing sales. It involves redeeming online pre-purchased tickets, and also talking folks through the process on their mobile devices if they have not bought their tickets yet. It requires patience, grace, and a great sense of humor, along with the soul of an IT ninja.

This person also handles sales at our outdoor mini-store. There is no cash handling with this position. It sounds huge, but the reality is that during the pandemic, visitation has been greatly reduced, making this totally doable. The ship is currently open for exterior tours only. Other volunteers greet our guests at the Quarter Deck and keep them engaged, plus there's a video to watch, so folks are pretty chill.

This is a fun position, but only for the right prospect. You have to be comfortable with the tech. The crew is great and the other volunteers will walk you through anything you need to know. It's a real family.

Also be aware that we follow very strict COVID-19 safety protocols and there is a fair bit of paperwork, training and a background check involved. We know it's a lot, but these are extraordinary times and we do what we have to in order to remain open - and once it's done, it's smooth sailing. We'll walk you through it.

Minimum Requirements:

Prospective volunteers should be at least 18 years of age. The minimum commitment is 1/2 day per week. Other qualifications include:

  • Excellent customer service attitude.
  • You must maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times
  • communicate effectively both verbally and written
  • be able to listen and respond to a guest or fellow employee, multitask and prioritize, and maintain a high level of professionalism
  • Ability to work independently
  • Advanced knowledge of mobile devices including phones and tablets, and a quick study for learning ticketing system/sales software


As a PBC volunteer, you are joining the crew of the Battleship IOWA, one of the fastest growing new museums in Los Angeles. We are a community that is sustained by the drive to preserve and interpret this iconic and unique piece of history for generations to come. You will work with a dedicated and highly motivated group of volunteers from multiple generations including veterans who served aboard the Battleship IOWA.

(When not dealing with a global pandemic) We enjoy a host of social activities including potlucks, field trips, special lectures and behind the scenes tours of areas of the ship that are not currently (and may never be) open to the general public. Volunteers receive a discount in our ship’s store and in some area restaurants and businesses. Our volunteers are also recognized with a variety of awards and ceremonies that celebrate milestones of service and outstanding accomplishments.

Processing and Training:

Prospective volunteers must complete the online application at the link listed below. Prospects may apply and interview for multiple opportunities, but acceptance is determined by each department head.

New volunteers are paired with a Sponsor on their first day and are expected to attend a one day orientation class offered each month. Departmental training is provided through one-on-one mentorship. Training will be provided in Salesforce data entry.

Pacific Battleship Cen ter is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the last of the great battleships and the one to define her class, the Battleship IOWA BB-61. The IOWA is a floating museum on the LA waterfront. Our guests experience the battleship in a variety of ways including tours, special events, concerts, parties and promotions, as well as exciting educational programs. We are open seven days a week.

The Battleship IOWA crew comes from a variety of backgrounds including maritime, military, business, attraction, non-profit, arts, technology, hospitality, construction, and other trades. Through the unique melding of these skills, the crew has become a dynamic and efficient team that works to provide our guests an authentic American experience. We celebrate the American Spirit daily by bringing the Battleship IOWA alive for guests of all ages to enjoy.
